Fed: Alston rumours spur call for more independence
The minor parties have increased calls for an independent selection process for overseas
postings.
The calls follow a report that former federal frontbencher RICHARD ALSTON is favourite
to become Australia's next high commissioner to London.
The 62-year-old retired from politics this year after 18 years as a Victorian senator
and nearly eight years as communications minister.
Incoming Australian Democrats leader LYN ALLISON says her party is focused on appointments
being on merit based on an independent process.
Australian Greens leader BOB BROWN has called for an independent body to make appointments.
He says it would be jobs for the boys to have someone so politically biased appointed
by the Howard government -- and Mr ALSTON would represent the 45 per cent of Australians
who voted for the government at the last election at best.
But Human Services Minister JOE HOCKEY says Mr ALSTON is well respected internationally,
and his appointment would be a great idea.
