Auto dealerships forced to fight unlikely enemy

Bob Van Iten, owner of Village Pontiac-GMC in Naperville, isn'tletting his guard down on the idea he could one day be competing withthe very automaker on which he's staked his name and fortune.

General Motors Corp., facing a backlash from the people who sellits cars, last month backed off a plan to buy and run as many as 10percent of its 7,800 U.S. dealerships.

"I don't think this is the end of it," said Van Iten. "They didn'tsay they would stop, but I do think they're going to get a lot moredealer input before they move ahead."
