Fed: Labor keeps mum on maternity leave plans

Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN says a new report urging government-funded paid maternityleave is an important contribution to the family debate.

But Mr CREAN has refused to reveal Labor's maternity leave proposals, which he sayswill be released in the new year.

Sex Discrimination Commissioner PRU GOWARD has recommended the government fund 14 weeksof paid maternity leave at the federal minimum wage rate of $431 per week.

Mr CREAN won't say whether Labor's policy will involve a cost on employers as well as government.

But he says the proposals will go beyond maternity leave and cover the wider issueof balancing work and family responsibilities.

Mr CREAN says the ALP will be building on some aspects of Ms GOWARD'S report.
