Fed: National restroom map makes for easier relief
PERTH, Dec 29 AAP - Travellers and others needing to spend a penny will soon be able
to pinpoint exactly where their nearest dunny is.
A Perth company has mapped every one of the nation's 13,924 public toilets, as well
as service stations, fast food outlets and supermarkets.
Results from the survey, carried out as part of a commonwealth government initiative,
would be available soon through a range of sources including a website.
A spokesman for National Geographic Information Systems said today the company had
surveyed 701 local councils and received a 99.2 per cent response rate.
It documented 12,938 public toilets managed by local government and 986 facilities
managed privately, such as within shopping centres.
New South Wales had the most number of public toilets with 3,751, followed by Victoria
with 3,026, Queensland (2,218), Western Australia (1,560) and South Australia (996).
Tasmania had 501 public restrooms, ACT 205 and Northern Territory 173.
The mapping was conducted for the federal Department of Aged Care to increase awareness
and assistance to people with incontinence.
