TAS: Unwelcome visitors wing in from big island

A large wave of bush flies has hit Tasmania this summer.

The bush flies, which breed in cattle dung and are attracted by human secretions, havemade their way across Bass Strait in great numbers in recent weeks in a phenomenon knownas passive dispersal.

University of Tasmania environmental studies lecturer PETER MCQUILLAN says the lasttime he recalls seeing such large numbers of bush flies in the state was in the mid-1990s.

Dr MCQUILLAN says the bush flies are common on the mainland but relatively uncommon in Tasmania.

He says the flies have been brought across by strong winds.
